Things to do in and around Twickenham – My Weekend Blog

Although predominantly known for rugby and the stadium of the same name (English Rugby’s home and the home of the RFU), Twickenham has a lot more to offer those both locally and looking for a day out in the area. On the doorstep you have the weekly Farmer’s market for a Farm staple or maybe you just want to go for a walk in a National Heritage Park and have a look at the deer; Twickenham has so many hidden wonders that will whet any appetite.

Personally, I am a fan of a good walk with my wife and son (have to tire him out somehow) and then a quick bite to eat (or making the most of my Pret membership)! I am a big fan of Thai so The Albert by Twickenham Green is our “go-to” (plus I have known the Landlord Kenny since the day I was born – but that’s another story), whilst we also know that we can jump on the train and be in central London in less than 30 minutes (again, my son tends to dictate and he loves the aquarium).

I think people forget that we have two Rugby stadiums next to each other and, although Twickenham is the obvious one, The Stoop probably offers more regular viewing, especially with a lot of current England players plying their trade for Harlequins.

For us, a weekend will normally consist of a trip to the Farmer’s Market (normally onsite between 9 am and 1 pm) and then either a swim at the Virgin Active at Twickenham or a trip to either Marble Hill Park for a walk along the river into Richmond or just letting George run around the very interactive children’s playground.

We seem to have joined most memberships in the area and a short drive or bus out to Hampton allows us to explore the grounds and palace of Hampton Court. Surprisingly, it again is well-catered for children! I think a lot of people will be surprised that there’s quite an impressive children’s play area here too and they regularly do children inspired events – there’s some more adult themed ones too. For just over £100 a year for a couple and up to six children, there’s worse things to invest in (plus you’re contributing to the Historic Royal Palaces and get access to numerous places across England). On the border you also have Bushy Park so for anyone looking for something different or to extend their day, a walk through here is a great way to whittle away an afternoon.

For my family and I, anything interactive is always going to be our first choice for George but we incorporate food for my wife and I, be that the Thai mentioned above or a speciality pie from our butcher in St Margarets. Overall, it’s a great day out and if you’re struggling for ideas, just meandering along the river in either direction will always be a great way to spend a day.
